Some Signs that A Child May Be Gifted In The Arts:

They have a natural talent for art, dance, drama, or music (or more than one). They pick up melodies, characters, movements and images and they seem to produce and reproduce them relatively effortlessly.

They are passionately involved in these activities and often seek to do them on their own.

They seem to move in order to learn something (dance); they are always drawing or making things (visual art); they sing constantly or tap on tables (music); they engage in physical comedy or speak in accents—often “class clowns” (theater).

Some are tremendously expressive but not good at writing.

Many are extremely sensitive.

Who Gets Identified?

Ohio State Law requires school districts to identify gifted students in grades K-12 in the visual and performing arts.

Division (D) of Ohio Revised Code section 3324.03 states: A student shall be identified as exhibiting “visual or performing arts ability” superior to that of children of similar age if the student has done both of the following:

Demonstrated through a display of work, an audition, or other performance or exhibition, superior ability in a visual or performing arts area;

Exhibited sufficient performance, as established by the Department of Education, on approved checklist of behaviors related to a specific arts area.

Does your student show evidence of being gifted in the arts?

Contact that child’s art or music teacher.

More information is available on line through the Ohio Department of Education Website:

In our district, students will present their work or perform for identification on May 24, 2006
